Chapter Eight
Jacob and Deborah were married two days later by Pastor Norsworth in her parentsâ home with only her immediate family and a few close family friends present. During that interval, Sammy had hardly allowed Deborah to set him down even for a few minutes. She didnât mind, for the most part, except that it left her no time to clean up after meals and such. Jacob reassured her that she was doing exactly what needed to be done by holding and loving him. And she was coming to love the little boy as if he were her own.
Which he would be from now on.
The thought was both a thrilling and sobering one.
Deborah wore her favorite gown, an ice blue satin, accented with a white overlay of chiffon and yards of ruffles. When it came time for the groom to kiss the bride, Jacob leaned over and brushed her lips with his. A small tingle lingered afterward, and she offered a brief smile. Her new husband squeezed her hand, his lips only slightly raising at the corners. He had either been gone at work or quiet once he arrived home over the past forty-eight hours. Deborah had sensed that he needed time to work this change of plans out in his mind.
Her mother served tea and cake, then Deborah and Jacob left with Sammy shortly afterward. She walked into her new home as a married woman and looked around the room, seeing it with new eyes. Over the past few weeks, she had done some cleaning as needed, but she hadnât felt that it was her place to deep clean. That would change, starting tomorrow.
Tonight, however, she was worried and her stomach was tied in knots. She and Jacob hadnât discussed what would happen on their wedding night. What would be required of her? Her mother had given her hints regarding the intimacy between a man and wife but had also left it vague enough that Deborah had questions. None of which she could ask anybody.
She changed Sammy and rocked him to sleep, holding him against her bosom until Jacob offered to put him in his bed.
âUm, no.â Taking a deep breath, she shook her head. âI think I want to hold him a little longer.â
Jacob gazed down at her, a half-smile touching his lips. âDeborah, you donât need to be nervous. Iâm not expecting you to, uh, do anything you arenât comfortable with. In fact, I thought you might like to sleep in Betsyâs old room. With Sammy.â
Oh! How foolish of her to jump to conclusions. Relief flooded through her. âYes, I would. Thank you.â
âLet me put the baby to bed and then we can discuss a few things.â
A few minutes later, he returned, still dressed in his fine suit and shined-up shoes. Her new husband was quite dapper. She was a lucky lady, if looks were anything to judge by.
He sat next to her and took her hand in his. Another tingle ran up her arm. âDeborah, I
